Give your English the right foundation

One of the most important things you can do to improve your language learning, is to focus on vocabulary. This post looks at how you can give yourself the lexical foundation you need to become a confident English speaker.

Learning English is a goal for so many, yet relatively few people actually reach this goal and feel comfortable and confident speaking English. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that one of the most important things you can do to improve your language learning, is to focus on vocabulary. This post looks at how you can give yourself the lexical foundation you need to become a confident English speaker.

There are lots of tools and apps out there to help people learn English, and lots of language schools that say they have the best methods and the best teachers to help you learn in the fastest possible way. Yet it’s probably the case that there is no ‘best’ way to learn. Some people will love learning online, others will want to speak to real people face to face. Some might want to dedicate 6 hours a day to their studies and others only 15 minutes. So the best way to learn English is the way that suits you best.

But there are some things which are constant in this process. With the rise in prominence of the lexical approach in language learning, more emphasis has been placed on learning English vocabulary, and learning it in the right way. The lexical approach focuses on the importance of words and phrases as the key to unlocking language proficiency. So instead of spending years learning all the grammatical theory, or spending ages reading and listening to texts that you barely understand, learn common words and their relationships with each other and this will help with all the other aspects of learning.

The idea with Flovoco is that you learn what you need in order to give yourself a lexical foundation that you can build on in the future. So don’t waste time learning words that are very low frequency, you can pick them up later in your language learning journey. Don’t worry too much about grammar, you’ll pick that up along the way as you learn all the words and see them coming together to form phrases and sentences. But do try and learn as much as you can about the words that are important. Learn how they sound and how they’re spelled; learn English phrases and combinations of words; learn which words are often found together and the kinds of situations they are used in.

Here at Flovoco we feel that this foundation is well served by technology. The Flovoco app is easy to use and allows you to set goals and tracks your progress. You can see yourself improve as you push some of the most useful and common English vocabulary up through levels that focus on different aspects of what it means to know a word.
